How to start a pest control business in Texas

Pest control treatment along a house foundation

This is not legal, tax, or insurance advice. Read the official pages linked here. Partner offers are optional and labeled.

Pick one or two categories you are licensed for and build the route around them. Adding termites or wildlife later is a license decision, not a menu decision. The page should list what you refuse. In Texas the first customers are in Austin, Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, San Antonio, McAllen–Edinburg. Austin pest work is fire ants, scorpions, mosquitoes along creeks, and German roaches in older central houses. Houston pest control means Formosan termites, mosquitoes, and roaches that do not care about your quarterly flyer. Dallas–Fort Worth pest calls are fire ants, mosquitoes, rodents when the weather snaps, and termites in soil that stays warm. San Antonio pests are fire ants, scorpions, mosquitoes, and termites in the heat. Valley pest control is mosquitoes, ants, roaches, and a warm season that does not give you a winter reset.

Texas is several markets: Gulf humidity, north-Texas hail, a short freeze that still breaks pipes, and a Valley that almost never freezes. The license depends on the trade. City permits sit on top. Do not use one city page for the whole state.

File an LLC with the Texas Secretary of State business filings. The Form 205 instructions linked from the Texas Secretary of State list the certificate-of-formation filing fee. When those instructions were read for this site, the fee was $300. The same office says it cannot tell you which entity to choose. Open the instructions and confirm the number before you pay. A sole proprietorship can still be you, under your own name, without this filing. The fee is not a suggestion to form an LLC.

Some boxes are labeled Partner. ServiceBase has not joined those programs. The links go to each company's own homepage, not a tracking link. If a program later approves us, the address will change and we may earn a commission. You can file, insure, and bank anywhere. Official government links are not partner links. Nothing on this page is a discount code.

Keep the checklist on your account

The guide stays public. An account saves your state, city, and trade, and lets you mark each filing as you go. The advertising credit is reserved when you register. It can be spent after the free website is live.

  1. 01Choose a name in Texas

Use a calm name. Customers are already uneasy. Search the pesticide agency and the state filing office, because the applicator license and the company name both get checked. Match them on the truck and the invoice.

Search that name at the Texas Secretary of State business filings before you print shirts. Use the same spelling on the truck and on a quote in Austin.

  2. 02Form the LLC or stay a sole proprietor

You can operate as a sole proprietor if the applicator license is in your name and the state allows it, or as an LLC that employs the licensed applicator. Read the pesticide agency's company-registration rule. It is often separate from the personal applicator card. An LLC does not authorize an unlicensed helper to apply product. If you are unsure how to class the helpers, ask the agency and an accountant before the first route.

  3. 03Get a free EIN from the IRS

An employer identification number is the business tax ID. The IRS issues it online at no charge and says you never have to pay a company to get one. If you form an LLC, file with the state first. The IRS says an EIN application can stall when the state filing is not done. A sole proprietor can often start with a Social Security number and get an EIN when a bank or a hire requires it.

Apply on the IRS page if you want the number yourself. LegalZoom, the partner beside this step, can request it while they form the company. That service is optional. The IRS fee is still zero either way.

  4. 04Check the pest control license in Texas

The Texas licensing page we could verify is the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Open it and read the part that names the work you will sell.

TDLR licenses some trades, including electricians and air-conditioning contractors. Its program list does not include a general landscaper license. Irrigation and pesticide work have their own offices below. Cities can still require a registration.

Find the state pesticide or structural pest control license and read the category for the pests you will treat. The contractor board may be a second step, or it may not list pest control at all. Confirm both. Termites and wildlife are often their own categories.

The Texas Department of Agriculture page linked from our state list is about applying pesticides to lawns, ornamentals, trees, and weeds for hire. A company that treats kitchens, attics, or termites should look for the structural pest control category on the state site. Do not treat the lawn page as that structural license. TDLR's verified note on this site names electricians and air-conditioning contractors, not pest control.

A city or county can require its own registration even when the state page is quiet. The city guides name the local permit counter. Call that office and write down what they say. Do not pay a third party that promises a license until you have read the official page.

  5. 05Insure the work

General liability that knows you apply pesticides in homes, plus any pollution or chemical wording the insurer requires. Ask. Commercial auto for the service vehicle. Workers' compensation before a tech is applying product for you. Customers with children and pets will ask what you use. The certificate and the applicator card should both be easy to send.

Workers' compensation is a state program. Before anyone works with you, including a friend, ask an insurer and the state labor office whether you must carry it. This guide does not quote a headcount, because those rules differ and the state page is the source. The SBA page describes the common policies. It does not sell them. Buy the policy before you work in a house in Texas.

  6. 06Open a business bank account

Chemical invoices and route payments go in the business account. Recurring plans create small, steady deposits. Record which address paid so a cancellation is obvious. Set tax money aside before you treat a good month as spending money.

The bank will usually ask for your ID, the EIN or your Social Security number, and the formation papers if you filed an LLC. A checking account and a habit of setting tax money aside are enough at the start.

  7. 07Price the work Texas actually has

Separate a one-time visit from a recurring plan, and price them from the pest and the structure. Ants in a kitchen, rats in an attic, and mosquitoes in a yard are not one flat fee. Say what the visit includes and what costs a second trip.

Crawl spaces, slabs, and shared walls change the time. Write the price for the structures you actually treat in this city. Decline wildlife or termite bonds on the page if you do not hold that category.

Austin: long summers that sit above 100°F, flash floods on dry ground, and a short cold snap that still breaks pipes General pest, fire ants, mosquito treatments, and termites only if you offer them. Houston: Gulf humidity, hurricane season, and street flooding that reaches houses the maps called safe General pest, mosquitoes, and termites only if that is a real license and a real offer. Dallas–Fort Worth: hail season, tornado warnings, 100°F summers, and the occasional ice storm Recurring general pest, fire ants, rodents, and termites if you are set up for them. San Antonio: long heat, limestone and clay, sudden rain, and watering rules tied to the Edwards Aquifer Fire ants, scorpions, mosquitoes, and termites if you offer a real plan. McAllen–Edinburg: extreme heat, a mild winter, irrigation culture, and tropical wind and rain Mosquitoes, general pest, and termites only if you are equipped for them.

  8. 08Get found, then create the free site

Google Business Profile that names the local pests, not a national top-ten list. Reviews that mention the pest and the neighborhood help the next customer. The website splits one-time and recurring, and the form asks which pest, where they saw it, and whether children or pets are home. ServiceBase keeps those requests.

In Austin, Houston, Dallas–Fort Worth, San Antonio, McAllen–Edinburg, the profile, the reviews, and the site should name the neighborhoods you actually drive. ServiceBase publishes the page and keeps quote requests in a list on your account. No card. It does not file the LLC, get the EIN, or buy the insurance.
